Tuesday, February 24, 2009 11:09

safari 4 beta

Today, both Mac and Windows users can scarf up a beta copy of Safari 4, with many new and desirable features. Here’s a download link for those who are ready to go.

The new browser features:

  • Cover Flow — You can browse through your site history or bookmarks the same way you browse album covers in iTunes
  • Top Sites — look at renderings of your favorite sites, and open any one of them with a single click
  • Full History Search — A clever way to visit sites you have been to in the past. You can type a word or phrase into the history search field and you’ll get a cover flow view of sites that match your criteria
  • Nitro Engine — Apple claims JavaScript now executes 30 times faster than IE7 and 3 times faster than Firefox
  • Tabs on Top — Allows Safari to have multiple pages open at the same time in a single browser window, and to switch back and forth with a click. The new Safari beta gives you more room at the top of the sceen when in tabbed mode.
  • Windows Native Look and Feel — The Windows Safari 4 beta more closely matches the look of other Windows applications and gives access to standard Windows fonts; Apple claims the same performance boost on Windows as in the Mac version

Other features include Full Page Zoom, a ’smart’ address field, a ’smart’ search field, and more robust phishing and malware protection.

Safari 4 beta also includes some improved developer tools. Details on those options can be found here.

Apple introduces iLife ‘09 at Macworld Expo

Thursday, January 8, 2009 1:48

Yesterday at Macworld Expo, Phill Schiller announced that availability of iLife ‘09. Not a huge surprise, as a few of us guessed we’d see an iLife update today, but it does offer some cool new features.

iPhoto

iPhoto has been updated with two features called “Faces” and “Places.” Faces, as you may have guessed, lets you tag photos by subjects’ faces, similar to what Facebook and Picasa have done. iPhoto makes its best guess as to the identity of a subject based on previous tags and asks for confirmation. Of course, Phil called it “..the best technology we’ve found for face detection.”

Places allows for geotagging of photos. Some cameras and the 3G iPhone will use GPS information to tag photos on longitude and latitude. iPhoto then organizes those photos by location, or “place.” Also, Flickr and Facebook support are built-in. Those without GPS access can retro-tag photos by hand.

Other iPhoto features include enhanced slideshows and travel books.

A very interesting slide show for Google!

Tuesday, December 2, 2008 22:25

This is a very interesting 34-slide presentation on Google prepared by FaberNovel, a french consulting firm. It is hard to realize the real nature of this just 10 years old giant given the number of services it has continuously released, updated (and sometimes shut down) or acquired.

This presentation gives a great overview of the company’s overall strategy and the reasons it has become what it is today.

Search!o – The tabbed search

Monday, December 1, 2008 2:05

While the majority of our day-to-day searches are easily handled by our favorite search engine, there are always those intensive searches that have you jumping from site to site – or opening a series of tabs – to find a good cross-section of information on a given topic. Even once you’ve established a preferred workflow for this kind of comprehensive searching, it can be time consuming to run through the process.

Wouldn’t it be easier if you could simply enter one query and have it run through a bunch of search sites?

Of course it would. And that’s what makes Search.io so appealing. It’s a meta search engine that searches a variety of sites – grouped by topic – and displays them as tabs to help you find information more quickly and easily.

To use Search.io, simply enter your search term and select your specific area of interest. Topics range from the default “search engines” to “blogs” to “torrents.” There’s even a search for popular “Web 2.0″ sites. And for the more voyeuristic types, there’s a listing of the latest searches.

While some of the tab sets seem to be stretching it a bit – I’m pretty sure the last time I cared about finding information in Alta Vista or Lycos was some time in the last century – the concept has a great deal of potential.

In fact, I’ve already added a couple of the search options to my toolbar – like the people and social bookmarks searches – and I’m going to keep using them to see if they speed my searches. I’m sure that once I’ve been using the service for a while, I’ll find some ways to employ creative queries that will streamline my searching even further.

To test drive tabbed search for yourself, visit Search.io.

Umbrella Today? – The simplest weather forecast website!

Friday, November 28, 2008 2:27

This is a brilliant and very easy idea. There are some ideas that can be too easy that nobody thinks about them. Umbrella Today is one of these ideas. It is a very simple website. The user just put his or her Zip Code (US only) and asks if he has to take his umbrella. The possible results are two. YES or NO! Check it..

Tomorrow in San Francisco we will not need an umbrella!!! :-)
